Sheila graduated from Sam Houston State University with her Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice (1998), with minors in Sociology and English, then a Teaching Certification in Secondary English (2002), and, later, a Masters of Arts in English (2006). While she was interested in government and justice, she found that education and teaching students was her true passion.
She worked in Conroe ISD for 13 years, and currently teaches at LoneStar College as an adjunct instructor. During her time in Conroe, Sheila was able to focus on teaching close-reading analysis, writing development, and critical thinking skills. Whether the students were preparing for an exam or not, students were learning real-world skills. She taught students with various skill levels, from STAAR remediation to SAT/ACT college preparation. She taught groups of students struggling with STAAR, some of whom had taken the state exam several times. After one semester of working with her, these students were not only successful, but they excelled. She has taught on-level courses, as well as Advanced Placement; she attends the AP Reading and scores AP English essays each summer for College Board (5 years), which gives her a unique perspective and understanding of their essay requirements. While teaching in Conroe ISD, Sheila also taught district SAT/PSAT and ACT prep courses, making her the perfect tutor for your high school student preparing to move on to college!
Sheila is known for her ability to get to know her students and make learning interesting. She works well with all students, finding what works for each individually. She is a solution-oriented person, who loves to teach, but also loves to learn. Her ultimate goal is to create critical thinkers and life-long learners.
